Onion & garlic syrup
This is one of the simplest remedies to whip up at home. Suitable for colds, flu's and sore throats. Take at the first sign of any of these and adults can take 1 teaspoon 3x daily.
First gather together everything you need.
All that goes into it are onions, a bulb of garlic and sugar. You'll also need a jar...and a spoon for the sugar.
Peel your onions and garlic. Prepare to cry a little.
Prepare to cry even more by quartering and thinly slicing the onions. (I ended up needing only one onion, the other one ended up in my lunch).
Now start layering up the onions, garlic and sugar. Be fairly generous with the sugar. The sugar is going to be pulling the liquids out of the onions and garlic and will form a syrup also, you'll need a good amount of sugar to preserve this. Oh and try to keep pushing all the layers down as much as possible as you layer.
Keep going until your jar is full with alternating layers then seal it up and put it to one side.
Thirty minutes later and its starting to look more like a syrup. Shake it occasionally.
Once the sugar is dissolved its ready...this will take a few hours but normally I just leave it overnight.
Now strain. Yes, it doesn't make a huge amount once strained but it is strong so don't be fooled. Grab a spoon and hold your nose! Keep it in the fridge and I'd use it within the week and just make up a fresh batch if you are running low.
Enjoy! Well...as much as you can enjoy sweet onion and garlic!
